Ty Bowman is currently working in interactive video and producing screen prints. He uses open source electronics, graphics programming environments and the Kinect sensor to develop interactive video installations.

Ty Bowman developed an early interest in photography growing up in Dallas, Texas while using a Kodak Brownie camera. He later inherited his grandfather’s Zeiss Icon camera at age 15 which led to a photojournalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin and work as a newspaper photographer.

Bowman was recognized for his black and white pinhole photographs after receiving an artist’s fellowship in the summer of 1981 at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico. He entered art school that year and later earned a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MFA in printmaking from North Texas State University.

In 1987 Bowman moved to Los Angeles and for several years producing fabricated steel and mixed media sculptures along with steel and glass functional art furniture. After re-tooling his career with two years of computer graphic design and multimedia at UCLA extension, Bowman was hired by Cerritos College in Norwalk, CA to teach digital illustration and animation in the fine arts department and now works as the Web Administrator.

Excited by the digital format, Bowman returned to photography in 2002. In 2004 he began traveling to Europe, Asia and North Africa to gather digital photographs most recently exhibited at the Grand Canyon National Park, AZ and the Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach CA.
